WD Sobieski Cup 2021/22

John III Sobieski
John III Sobieski was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1674 until his death. Born into Polish nobility, Sobieski was educated at the Jagiellonian University and toured Europe in his youth. As a soldier and later commander, he fought in the Khmelnytsky Uprising, the Russo-Polish War and during the Swedish invasion known as the Deluge.

Final

Walter Burnett 1-0 Elliot Sloan 

The final of the Sobieski Cup as played on 8th of March 2022 at Pilrig Bowling Club. Both players have seen a return to form recently and the game was an interesting one.  Walter was white and played the kings gambit, Elliot countered with the Falkbeer Counter gambit and the complications ensued.

Walter triumphed in the end to become the 2022 Sobieski Cup Winner.

An over the board  handicap knock-out tournament with more time going to the lower graded player providing there was at least 200 grading points difference. The games will be ungraded.

The competition will take place at the club premises.

The start date will be Tuesday the 10th January 2022. 

The handicap is as follows:

Grading difference and time handicaps:

800+  30 mins v 1hr 30mins,
600-799 = 35mins v 1hr 25mins,
400-599 = 40mins v 1hr 20mins,
200-399 = 45mins v 1hr 15mins.

Hence each game in this fun event will take longer than 2 hours.

Note that any draws will result in both players going through to the next round.
