  • Mark Condie - a brief history

As can be seen from the following newspaper cutting Mark was one of the best players in Scotland at age 17. He was Scottish Champion in 1989 at St. Andrews and led the Scottish team in the Dubai Olympiad in 1986. He achieved the highest ever score, by a British player, of 9.5/13 in the European Junior chamionship in Holland. He still retains what might be a unique achievement - a 100% record against the current world champion, Vishy Anand. He has played Anand once and it was a win for Mark. He was all set to reach GM level and possibly the highest level in the world when he was hit by incurable illness (Wilson's). As a consequence he lacked the fitness to compete at the highest level and therefore concentrated on training. One of his students was Jonathan Rowson who has won the British Championship 3 times in a row and is the best Scottish player ever.
